Germany is one of Europe's most important hunting destinations, with a deeply embedded hunting culture governed by some of the continent's most detailed wildlife management legislation. Driven wild boar, roe deer stalking and red deer are the primary attractions for visiting hunters from the UK. Since Brexit, UK hunters are non-EU nationals and must obtain a German firearms import permit before arriving with a rifle or shotgun. The permit is issued by the local Waffenbehorde (weapons authority) in the relevant German district and is arranged through your German hunting host or outfitter.

Germany is one of Europe's most important hunting destinations, with a deeply embedded hunting culture and excellent infrastructure for visiting hunters. Driven wild boar, roe deer stalking and red deer are the primary attractions for UK hunters. Since Brexit, UK hunters are non-EU nationals and must obtain a German firearms import permit before travelling. The application is made directly by the hunter and is straightforward provided documentation is complete and timelines are respected.
Before applying for any permit, confirm your hunt dates, location, and accommodation with your German outfitter or hunting host. You will need a formal letter of invitation from them confirming the dates, the province or state (Bundesland) where the hunting will take place, and the property or estate details. This letter is a required part of your application.
You will need to submit the following: your UK Firearm Certificate, a copy of your passport, the invitation letter from your host, your travel dates, and details of where you will be staying in Germany. Full details of each firearm (make, model, calibre, serial number) must be included. Compile all documents before making contact with the relevant authority.
Submit your documents directly to the relevant German authority. Payment is made by direct bank transfer. The permit documentation is then processed and forwarded to the police in the province or state (Bundesland) where your hunting will take place. The Deutscher Jagdverband (German Hunters' Association) can provide guidance on the relevant contacts for your specific region if required.
Once your permit has been issued and confirmed, you may travel to Germany with your firearms without issue. Carry your UK Firearm Certificate, your permit documentation, your passport, and your invitation letter at all times. Allow at least 6 to 8 weeks from initial application to departure to ensure there is no time pressure.
This step is separate from the firearms permit and is not something Ambulo arranges, but it is a legal requirement to hunt in Germany and you should be aware of it. To hunt in Germany, you must hold a valid German hunting licence — the Jahresjagdschein (annual hunting licence) or a Tagesjagdschein (day licence, available for up to three consecutive days). As a visiting hunter you may apply for a Jahresjagdschein through the relevant Bundesland hunting authority, though in practice many visiting hunters obtain a Tagesjagdschein through their German host. Your outfitter will advise on the correct route for your hunt. Without a valid Jagdschein, you are not legally permitted to hunt in Germany regardless of your firearms permit status.
Hunting in Germany is managed at the Revier (hunting district) level and regulations vary by Bundesland. Your outfitter or host will hold the relevant permissions for your hunt. The German Weapons Act (Waffengesetz) governs firearms possession in Germany. Confirm all season dates, bag limits, and licence requirements with your host before finalising travel plans.
We handle the forms in collaboration with the authorities to make sure everything is in your hands or on your phone before you fly.
Some hunting and sporting competition shoots ask outfitters and hosts to organise their guests temporary firearms permits. Your outfitter will be able to do this on your behalf through the Ambulo platform or you can do it yourself.
For outfitters and hosts organising permits for their guests, please contact tristan@ambulo.co to streamline this process.
To amend your application and your permit, before you travel, you need to contact us at least 14 days before your departure date. If you need to make amends to your permit, please email tristan@ambulo.co
Generally, you do not need to buy an additional permit for your stopover. However, some countries may require you to buy an additional permit. This is generally on a country by country basis. For example, if you are travelling to Poland, but flying to Germany and driving across, you may have to buy a permit for Germany, depending on the location.
Permit costs vary depending on the country you are travelling to. Once our permits go live you will be able to see a full pricing break down. We have priced this to be roughly the same price as hiring a rifle or shotgun at your final destination. Nothing beats taking your own equipment across!
At the moment, extending the length of your permit duration is not possible. We advise that you ask your host to either add a buffer time frame to the end of your trip in case you would like to stay longer. You can of course come back earlier if needs be but the duration and date of validity for your permit is linked to your arrival and departure dates you set out in your application.

At the moment, Ambulo only provides permits for the destination you are hunting within. If you are driving to your destination and crossing countries, you will have to follow each countries firearm rules and restrictions. This generally means you will need a permit for each country, if you are driving through Europe, for example.
We do not offer refunds at the moment, but is something we are working on. The reason we do not offer refunds is based on the agreements set by consulates, embassies and police forces of the destination countries.
You can either scan your Firearms License, Passport and letter of invitation through a traditional printer scanner, or use an application like Turbo Scan.
If you are using an app that converts photos into a scanned file, ensure all areas of the pages you scan are clear and legible and are saved as a PDF. For people with a UK firearms license, where your certificate contains multiple pages, ensure all pages are photographed and collated into one PDF.
