Why I started Ambulo
Discover the story behind Ambulo. Learn how a frustrating experience with firearms permits inspired a solution to make hunting abroad simple and stress-free.

Growing up in South Africa, my childhood was defined by the outdoors. My dad introduced me to hunting early on, and school holidays were spent on safari or exploring the Pilanesburg or Kruger National Park. These experiences instilled in me a deep appreciation for nature and the critical role that ethical hunting plays in conservation.
When I moved to the UK, I carried that passion with me. I soon discovered that the conversation around hunting and firearms was completely different here. In mainstream media, it is often painted with a negative brush, a stark contrast to the respectful, conservation focused activity I grew up with.
This disconnect became glaringly obvious during a trip I organised with friends. I wanted to change the narrative and share the positive aspects of hunting. The discipline, the connection to nature, and the community. But first, I had to deal with the mountain of paperwork that stood between us and our adventure.
It was 2019, post Brexit, and the European Firearms Pass was no more. A group of fourteen of us from the UK were planning our annual hunting trip to Poland. As the trip approached, the reality of the new rules hit us hard. Getting our firearms and ammunition across borders had become a logistical nightmare.
I took it upon myself to sort it out. Our usual route was to fly into Berlin and drive to Poland. Simple, right? Not anymore. Appointments at the German and Polish consulates in London led nowhere. No one seemed to have a clear process for UK hunters.
After countless calls, I finally discovered a convoluted process that involved sending documents to the Berlin police, paying fees to an international bank account, and then starting all over again for a Polish travel permit. It was a bureaucratic maze that took weeks to navigate. I spent hours filling out forms, chasing signatures, and coordinating with fourteen different people. The adventure felt a world away.
This experience was a wake up call. The joy of hunting abroad was being suffocated by administrative hurdles. We were drowning in paperwork, carrying stacks of documents just in case we were stopped. This was not just inefficient; it was taking the spirit out of the sport.
I realised that the systems in place were outdated. They needed to be brought into the modern era. That is when the idea for Ambulo was born. I started small, manually organising permits for friends and family, but I had a bigger vision to create a simple, digital solution for a complex problem.
Fast forward three years, and Ambulo's temporary firearms permit service is now a platform that streamlines the entire process. We have replaced endless queues and confusing forms with a straightforward, ten minute application. Now, you can get your temporary firearms license sorted quickly, leaving you more time to focus on what really matters, the adventure.
We handle the boring bits so you can get out there and have a damn good time. Our goal is to make hunting in Europe and beyond more accessible, shifting the focus back to the experience itself. We want to support the hunting community by making it easier to explore the wild places we love, while promoting the important role hunters play in conservation.
Hunting is about more than just the pursuit; it is about tradition, respect for nature, and the memories we create. Ambulo was built to protect that spirit. We are here to make the door to the outdoors a little wider and the path a little easier to follow.
Ready to spend less time on paperwork and more time in the field? Get your temporary firearms permit with Ambulo and focus on your next adventure. And when you’re back, record every outing in the game book — because every trip deserves to be remembered.
